A Message from the Covenant of the Goddess' Vision Team

Thank You

To everyone who took the time to answer the CoG Vision Survey, we'd like to relay our sincerest appreciation and thanks. In the coming months, the information and data offered by the survey will help us grow as an organization and better meet the needs of our expanding community.

The world is changing and CoG must change with it. The needs of Wiccans and Witches today are not the same as the needs back when we were founded in 1975. The CoG Vision Survey results will be used to help us redefine our mission in order to better meet present and future concerns.  In doing so, we hope to thrive, supporting our community, for another 40 years and beyond.

Thank You
The CoG Vision Team

Covenant of the Goddess responds to SCOTUS Ruling on Sectarian Prayer

The Covenant of the Goddess is deeply disappointed at Monday's Supreme Court ruling in the case Town of Greece vs. Galloway. It is our fear that such a ruling will lead to legislative prayer practices that fail to recognize or support the religious diversity within a given constituency. Our country was built on the promise of religious freedom. Our government, from town councils to our national Congress, should reflect that promise by supporting religious plurality and not falling back on traditions which no longer fit our changing American social landscape.

PantheaCon 2014 is now over and NCLC members can look back at another successful convention. Each year NCLC hosts a suite jointly with the New Wiccan Church and the New Reformed Orthodox Order of the Golden Dawn. NCLC first officers said, "NCLC is grateful for the generosity of CoG members in other parts of the country who donated toward the expenses of the Hospitality Suite. Their help made this project much easier."

NCLC members M. Macha Nighmare and Crystal Blanton will be participating in an "Alternative Spirituality" Panel on March 8 at the 2nd Annual Day of the Book. The event is held at John F. Kennedy University in Pleasant Hill, California and hosted by its Liberal Studies program.  For more information go this website.

This past Sunday Ardantane Pagan Learning Center, operated and supported by members of Chamisa Local Council, held its annual Ardantane Visioning Day. "Each year we gather to celebrate Ardantane’s past, do a reality check on the present, and imagine the possible futures of this community and its campus...[It is] one day to let our imaginations soar, and to discover our dreams and goals for the year ahead."

Registration has opened for Beltane Southwest 2014. "Join the merriment and celebrate spring's return to the Land of Enchantment!  Dance around the Maypole, cheer the May Royals, jump over the Bale Fire, enjoy workshops, vendors, feasting, drumming, dancing, and other rites of spring.  Beltane will be held May 1-4, 2014 in the Manzano Mountains east of Albuquerque, New Mexico."  Chamisa members regularly enjoy this seasonal event, serve on its Board and act as May King and Queen. Yuletide with Cog #3: Traditions from Circle of the Moonlit Sea

Submitted by Kasha, National First Officer and member of Everglades Moon Local Council (EMLC)

Each year, my coven, Circle of the Moonlit Sea, plans a Yule Celebration and invites friends, family, and members of the community. The specific theme of the ritual varies, but one thing doesn't change-the preparations and the food! A huge cauldron of vegan soup, home made bread and butter, and apple cider.

Preparations used to start in the middle of the night, with HP Forest Butera firing up a brick oven in the back yard and starting the process of making dozens of loaves of bread-Olive bread, Rye, Whole wheat, and the Crowd Favorite, Cheese Bread! Now Forest does that work the day before. We are all willing to have bread that it not hot from the oven in order to have a better rested Forest!

We gather early the day of celebrations to wash and chop vegetables, and then gather for our Soup Ritual, a rite at the cauldron with the women and men who are present that creates the beginning of the soup. A fire is built under the cauldron and tended by HP Joe Butera, making sure that dinner will be ready at the appointed time. During the late afternoon, guests begin to arrive and we continue with preparations, churning butter (we try to recruit enthusiastic children for this!) grinding peppercorns for the soup, and visiting and preparing for ritual. Just before dark, the women gather in the kitchen to make ritual cakes, and when the time is right, coveners and guests process through the back yard, past the cauldron where the soup is cooking for its last hour, to the ritual circle and celebrate the darkest night of the year and all it symbolizes. We send each ritual attendee home with a handmade token of our Rite and what it symbolized that year.

After ritual, we gather at the cauldron, where many years, a covener will recite the "Bubble bubble toil and trouble" verse from Macbeth, just because its witchy and fun, and then we all eat! Even though we are in Florida, most years, its a little cool, and sometimes, its downright cold, so soup is perfect on a dark, damp evening.  The Yule log, which has stood in the South of our circle since it was our Maypole at Beltane, is burned in the fireplace, not far from the Yule tree, which will become our next Maypole, and some years, later in the evening, we are visited by the Mari Lwyd, the Grey Mare, telling riddles and nipping people with her horsey teeth.

Our Coven Yule celebration is a time to be together and celebrate family, friends, our craft, and community. Each year, there is a different-and perfect-mix of people, and the incredible opportunity to celebrate the light which is about to come.

Covenant of the Goddess Responds to the Historic SCOTUS Rulings

Today SCOTUS has ruled on two cases that will directly affect many of our CoG members. Covenant of the Goddess supports equality and justice for all.  We are pleased to see that our country's highest court is making a decision to uphold that value. Today we celebrate with all of our LGBT members, their friends, families and communities as they take a huge step forward in their struggle for acceptance and freedom under the law.

Touchstone Local Council Has Fun While Raising Money for Local Animal Shelter

by Stachia Ravensdottir

I want to thank everyone for joining us at Touchstone Local Council's Family Fun Picnic yesterday!  We had a blast!

The kids area was a big hit!  "Kid" translates into actual child or kid-at-heart.  Although the broomstick races were canceled (we ran out of time) they had beading, games, puzzles and potholder looms!  Yes, I totally re-entered my childhood and made a potholder while I was at the welcome table.

We had three different tarot card readers, and a chant workshop in between drawings for the raffle (which had some awesome stuff!)  One of my favorite moments was one of our guests saying that she never wins anything, raffles are just her way of tithing just before her ticket was drawn!

The weather was beautiful (as long as the breeze stayed) and we had local folks in attendance as well as folks from farther afield (a three hour drive!)  Thanks to everyone's generosity, we were able to donate 164 pounds of dog & catfood to the Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley!

Well done everyone! Thank you for making it a such a fun event!

Covenant of the Goddess at PantheaCon 2013

(Edited from the NCLC reports)

PantheaCon 2013 was an overwhelming success. The CoG/NWC Suite saw more folks this year than we yet have seen. While the guest flow varied, at times fewer and at times more, there never was a time when the suite was without visitors.

NCLC was able to secure the Presidential Suite and that was a huge success. Many people took the time to actually tell us how comfortable they felt and how really welcoming we were.  Over the past few years, we have been working to expand our suite offerings with some great programming, plentiful food and down home hospitality.

This year Sara, our newest CoG member and current chair of the NWC, and her husband tended bar for the entire day both Saturday and Sunday (almost twelve hours each day) as well as Friday evening. The Mondavi wine tasting was an absolute smash with all of the bottles emptied. The Vice President of sales, Paul, offered to come back next year and host another wine tasting.

On Friday evening we hosted a Covenant meeting with some folks we hadn't seen in a while and a few members from out of state. It was primarily an excuse to introduce ourselves to one another with a little business discussed.

On Saturday we hosted Vivianne Crowley.  The event was a great success with many folks bringing books to be signed by her.  Afterwards she hosted a discussion with British Traditionalists on developments in the United Kingdom.  Those of us who attended learned quite a bit about what is currently happening across the Pond and discovered that it is much different than we might have expected.

On Sunday, we hosted a film screening of The Winnipagans, a documentary of Pagans in the Winnipeg Canada area. We had talks on Dragons and the hero myths of several cultures down through time. We lunched with a large group of Pagan Writers including our own Crystal Blanton.  River Higginbothen dropped in to visit as well.

Our most popular offering was the panel on the subject of Privilege and what that means.  While all of our other workshops were moderately attended, this one was full to overflowing.

PantheaCon has truly evolved into a National Pagan event. Attendance was pushed beyond capacity with so many things to do and not enough time.  In the CoG suite, we had folks from Connecticut, New York, Florida, and many states in between.  We saw so many familiar faces but we also had many new visitors -  young people, from all over, stopping in to ask about NWC and CoG.  We were complimented, time and time again, for our work.

We look forward to seeing you all there next year.
